Yard work!

I have been living in my house for a little over a month now and I decided that it was time to work on my yard. Why didn't anyone warn me of how much hard work this is?? And why didn't anyone warn me about getting a huge yard?? Oh, it is very tiring and a headache especially for someone who has never had to work in their own lawn. Why did I think that I could cut my entire lawn all by myself?? I gave up after half of the front yard was done. I guess I'm not super woman after all lol Men really do come in handy lol. But I did enjoy planting bushes and plants. Still not done yet though. I'll post pics if I can remember

  1. :-) Welcome to home ownership Tory. Yard work is very hard work, I guess that's why I have procrastinated as long as I have. My husband does the mowing while I do the raking of leaves in the spring. I absolutely hate it but he would rather leave the leaves to their own accord when fall begins. I on the other hand think leaves is unsightly and ugly, especially when left through winter season. I still have leaves in the backyard from this past fall. Other option is to pay someone to do the ugly job, but at times I do get the satisfaction from doing the job myself and other times I wish to pay someone else to do it. I can't wait until my kids are old enough to pay to do it. Just keep at it and pace yourself.

  2. Yard work is much harder than it looks! I agree! I always paid someone to mow because I have terrible allergies but I tried to keep up the rest on my own. It doesn't seem like it would take as much effort as it does. But it is nice to be able to look at it looking good and know that is all you!

  3. I've been a homeowner for twelve years now. I can honestly say I've been blessed with not having to mow the lawn, but planting flowers can be very time consuming. Good luck and congrats on the best purchase of your life.

  4. Someone already said it, but welcome to home-ownership! Congratulations on your purchase too. Yard work can be so much work, especially things like mowing and weed eating. I don't exactly enjoy those parts of lawn care. Maybe you can find a teenager in your neighborhood that could help with that part. Luckily, Bob and my son share the mowing duties, so I am left to do the fun stuff. To me, there is nothing better than planting, weeding, and watching plants grow. I love it. I love watching them evolve from year to year and seeing how big everything can get in such a short amount of time. I hope you learn to love it too, it is really very therapeutic.

  5. My neighbor used to laugh at me as I spent my winters with a large pry bar "popping" stones out of my yard. each spring of the first four years we lived here I took those stones and made a raised flower bed on the sloping area of our front yard.
I told him every time I create a new flower bed I reduce my mowing. Having a 1 acre yard can teach you some creative ways to "landscape" things so you're not spending all your free time mowing grass.

    1. I have already started making flower beds everywhere. Even around the trees. The less grass, the better.

  6. There is a lot of work that goes into being a homeowner but it is worth it. You will take pride in knowing you have done the work when the yard looks like a golf course, and the flower beds look like you have a professional gardener. You might want to find a child in the neighborhood that earns money mowing. Just a suggestion.

  7. I feel your pain, Tory, literally. We did yardwork over the Memorial Day weekend, and I was wiped after trimming countless bushes. UGH! It looked nice when we were done, but I literally zonked out on the couch for at least an hour before I could pry myself up to cook dinner. The nice thing is our eldest likes to help with the yardwork and now is very capable. More hands make the work lighter, so maybe you could recruit some of your girlfriends to come over and help one morning or afternoon. You could reward them with cold drinks and food of course. :)
